Alcohol Rehab trauma-informed care approach

Safety: Within our organisation, both staff and those we serve feel physically and psychologically secure; our environment is safe, and interpersonal interactions foster a sense of safety. Prioritising safety as defined by those we serve is essential.

Trust and transparency

Our organisational operations, procedures, and decisions are carried out transparently, aiming to build and sustain trust with clients, family members, staff, and others involved in the organisation (for instance, by providing timely, accurate, and honest information about current events, future actions, and the reasons behind them).

Peer support and self-help

We encourage individuals to engage with peer support and discover mutual self-help opportunities—pathways to establish safety, hope, collaboration, a sense of value, healing, and recovery.

Collaboration

We recognise the power dynamics between staff and clients, as well as among organisational staff, and strive to ‘flatten the hierarchy’, share decision-making, work collaboratively to develop healing relationships, and promote the understanding that everyone plays a role in a trauma-informed approach being therapeutic does not require one to be a therapist.

Empowerment

Encourage recovery and personal choice. Acknowledge that each individual’s experience of trauma is distinct and necessitates a tailored approach.

Re-traumatisation

Be mindful to avoid instilling feelings of powerlessness. Assist clients in making collaborative decisions and working together to establish goals and create a plan that supports their healing and progress. Staff should act as facilitators rather than controllers of the recovery process. Additionally, staff are empowered to perform their roles effectively, backed by sufficient organisational support.
